Candice Walker Cowal 2011
(4th Overall in the World Junior Championship)

Congratulations to Candice Walker on her success at Cowal Gathering on Saturday 27th August 2011.

Candice has been a dedicated student of the Sarah Hendry School of Dance from the age of 3 years old. Candice came 5th in the World Championship event in the Juvenile section in 2010 and at the age of 16, came 4th in the World Junior Championship in 2011. Candice has completed all her medal tests with the SDTA and will be taking her Associate exam in September.

Congratulations to SDTA Associate, Katie Lee, on winning the 2011 Junior World Highland Dancing Championships at Cowal.

Katie Lee began taking lessons at the age of 4 from Rebecca McKinnon and Elan Anselmo in Edmonton, Alberta. Upon Elan’s retirement from teaching, she trained solely with Rebecca and has been a pupil of hers ever since. Katie took her first SDTA Dance exams in 2000/2001. Sandra Bald Jones examined her Bronze Highland Exam and then later that year, Aileen Robertson examined her Bronze National Exam. Throughout the years, Katie completed all of her Highland and Theory exams with the SDTA and in the fall of this year, examined by Lynne Hamilton, passed her Associate’s Exam and is now an Associate Member of the SDTA.

Over the years, Katie has won several awards, including the Canadian Championship (2009 and 2011), the Commonwealth Championship, the Scottish Championship, the British Open Championship and the North American Championship. Winning the Junior World Championships at Cowal this summer is her greatest achievement and a tremendous honour. This award is a culmination of years of hard work and love of dance shared by both Katie and Rebecca. The memories that they have made over the years of all the fun trips taken on the path to Katie’s winning the World Championships will never be forgotten by either of them. However, none of these achievements would have been possible without the tremendous support of Katie’s family. Rebecca and Katie are both so proud and thank everyone who has supported them along the way in this journey.

Rehearsal times for the International Children’s Games

All the Highland Choreography Dance cast involved in the Opening Ceremony will rehearse at

John McCormack Centre, Carfin on 27 & 28 July
and Airdrie Academy, Airdrie on 1 & 2 August

It is very important that each dancer that has been specially picked to take part in this very exciting performance, can commit to the following rehearsal dates:

Wednesday 27 July 10.00-1.00pm
Thursday 28 July 10.00-1.00pm
Monday 1 August Registration 11.45
Tuesday 2 August Rehearsal 12.00-3.00pm
Wednesday 3 August Dress rehearsal at Fir Park Stadium, Motherwell
- Drop off Point – Our Lady’s High School,M/well, 5pm
- Collection – Our Lady’s High School, M/well, 8.45pm
Thursday 4 August Opening Ceremony, Evening Performance
- Drop off Point – Our Lady’s High School, M/well, 6pm
- Collection – Our Lady’s High School, M/well, 9.15pm (approx)

The Highland dancers will be housed in cafe 2 area and will be closely chaperoned and escorted to and from the stadium. All parents who have not already done so, will be required to fill in consent forms when they drop their children off at dress rehearsal. Unfortunately no parents will be allowed to stay in the school.

The performers should wear their kilt, hose and pumps and will be issued with a Games T/Shirt and two tickets at Dress Rehearsal.

Highland dancers required

Looking for up to two hundred SOBHD Highland Dancers to perform at the opening ceremony of the International Children’s Games 2011.
Dancers require to be 8yrs+ and reside in North or South Lanarkshire.

First Aid Course

Update: this course has been postponed – new date - 02/07/2011

We are hosting a First Aid course with emphasis on sports / dance injuries on ~~Sunday 1st May~~ Saturday 2nd July at the SDTA Studios.
The cost is £50 per person.
Completed course gains the participent a recognised First Aid Certificate.
There are only 8 places available so please contact the Office before Friday 22nd April to book and pay.

In Loving Memory of Rose Fletcher

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Rose Fletcher, founder of the Rose Fletcher Pipe Band and Highland Dancers. She died on Sunday 27th March aged 92.

Her funeral will be held on 8th April on St Stephen’s Church, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Manchester.
